he grand ensemble of Kirillo-Belozerski monastery was basically formed

during two centuries — from the end o f the XV to late XVII century.

The beginning o f stone construction in the monastery dates from 1496,

when Master Procho r Rostovski assisted by twenty stone masons erec

t h e c a t h e d r a l o f t h e D o r m i t i o n , which has survived to our

days. It was one o f the first stone structures in the north. Only a little earlier

two stone cathedrals were built: one in Spaso-Kamenni monastery on lake

Kubenskoe near Vologda, and the o ther in the nearby Ferapon tov mon a s ­

tery.

The arch itec tu ra l volumes of the cathedral o f the Do rm ition manifest

features o f the Moscow building tradition, which goes back to the late XIV —

early XV century, to the Zvenigorod cathedral o f the Do rm ition and the

Trinity-Sergius monastery cathedral. By this time the type of the four-piered

church with stepped arches supporting a drum, which give the in terior space
