FRIENDLY ALEUTS
Первыми «американцами», первыми туземцами, кото
рых встретили русские мореходы, были алеуты. Именно
они населяли и до сих пор населяют Алеутские рст.рйва,
что тянутся от Камчатки до Аляски.
Сначала русские познакомились с алеутами острова Ка
дьяк. Знакомство было не слишком тёплое, но довольно
скоро кадьякцы - «коняги» смирились с пришельцами.
Алеуты оказались покладистым народом. Большинство
из них приняли православие и получили русские имена и
фамилии. Был даже один мученик веры - Пётр Алеут. Уже
в 1815 г., когда границы Русской Америки раздвинулись
до испанских владений, до Калифорнии, испанцы захва
тили в плен несколько алеутов и стали требовать, чтобы
те приняли католичество. Никто не согласился. Петра Але
ута испанцы замучили насмерть.
Понемногу два народа перемешались. Русские охотно
брали в жёны алеуток. Дети русских и алеуток называ
лись креолами.
Вот что рассказывал о кадьякцах сам Григорий Шели
хов: «Коняги - люди рослые, здоровы, дородны, больше
круглолицы... мужчины, женщины и девки средний хрящ
в носу прокалывают, также искалывают все уши и ниж
нюю губу... У каждого мужчины нижняя губа прорезана,
и чрез то с первого взгляда показывается так, как с дву
мя ртами. Ходят босые, а дома и совсем нагие, только что
спереди опоясываются каким ни есть звериным лоскутом
или цветами и травою. Приезжающих гостей встречают,
вымаравшись красною краской, и в лучшем их наряде, ко
лотя в бубны и производя пляску, имея в руках военные
оружия. Живут в землянках, имеющих стены, обитые до
сками, окна наверху, оконницы делают из кишок и пузырей
разных животных. От природы хитры и предприимчивы, в
обидах мстительны и злобны, хотя с видом кажутся тихи
ми. Народ вообще весёлого и беспечного свойства. И от
того часто голод и наготу терпеть принуждены бывают.

Aleuts were the first «Americans», the first natives who
were met by Russian seamen. They occupied and till now oc
cupy the Aleutian Islands that last from Kamchatka to Alaska.
At first, the Russian have got acquainted with Aleuts of Ko
diak Island. Acquaintance was not too warm, but they'made
up mind to newcomers. Aleuts as it was appeared were the
appeasable people. The majority of them has accepted Ortho
doxy and has received Russian names and surnames.
There was even one martyr of believing - Peter Aleut. In
1815 when borders of Russian America were spread up to the
Spanish possession, to California, the Spaniards have cap
tured some Aleuts and began demanding to accept Catholi
cism. Nobody agreed. And the Spaniards have tortured Peter
Aleut .to death.
Gradually two nations were mixed up. The Russian willingly
took wives from Aleuts tribe. The children of Russian and
Aleuts were called as Creoles.
Here how Grigory Shelikhov wrote about Kodiaks: «Ko-
diaks are very tall people, healthy, portly, round faced... men,
women and girls are making a piercing of an average middle
cartilage in the nose, and also tattooing all ears and a lower
lip ... The lower lip each man is cut, and at first sight, they
look like with two mouths. Walking barefooted, and absolutely
nude in the house, just in front covered with some animal rag
or flowers and grass. Having dirtied by red paint and in their
best dress they meet the coming visitors, banging in tambou
rines and making dancing, having weapon in their hands.
They live in the dugouts with walls, upholstered with
boards;the windows are made of guts and bubbles of differ
ent anirrials. By nature, they are foxy and enterprising, when
insulted,they are vindictive and spiteful, though,at first glance,
and they seem calm. In general,the people are cheerful and
pretty careless. That is why they often suffering of hunger and
nakedness. For fishing they use fishing-rod made of bones,
with long leash of the dried cabbage,where one stalk could
reach forty and more sazhen... In the gulfs and bays they are
catching the red fish by arrows, when it rushes up from the
