Деятельностью русских промышленников Алеутские
острова, составляющие на Великом океане цепь бт вос
точного берега Камчатки до западного берега Ведерной
Америки были открыты.
В связи с этим явилась необходимость просветить
светом Евангельским местных жителей. Для этого'свя-
того дела по благословению Святейшего Синода Санкт-
Петербургский митрополит Гавриил поручил старцу Наза-
рию, игумену Валаамского монастыря, избрать способных
людей из братии обители В 1794 г. на Кадьяк прибыла
первая духовная миссия: десять монахов Валаамского
монастыря во главе с архимандритом Иосафом, среди ко;-
торых был и монах Герман.
Благословенным усердием проповедников быстро раз
ливался свет Евангельской проповеди между новыми
сынами России: за год около шести тысяч язычников
приняли христианство. Была заведена школа для образо
вания новокрещенных детей, выстроена церковь в месте
жительства миссионеров.
Но неведомыми судьбами Божиими успехи миссии были
недолговременны. Через шесть лет после своего много
полезного просвещения утонул во время бури вместе со
своею свитою начальник миссии Иосаф, прочие выбыва
ли один за другим, наконец остался один отец Герман, и
ему благоволил Господь долее всех собратий потрудиться
подвигом апостольским для просвещения алеутов.
С самых юных лет возымел он великую ревность к бла
гочестию, и шестнадцати лет от рождения принял мона
шеский постриг. Сначала поступил он в Троице-Сергиеву
пустынь Санкт-Петербургской епархии. Шесть лет прожил
отец Герман в Сергиевой пустыни и потом перешел в Ва
лаамский монастырь. Сыну купца из г. Серпухова Москов
ской губернии было суждено стать первым святым по
кровителем Русской Америки. После гибели всей братии,
долгое время отец Герман оставался в одиночестве.
Только в 1805 г. ему в помощь ненадолго прибыл ещё
один сподвижник, отец Гедеон, но вскоре он уехал. С тех
пор до своей смерти в 1837 г. отец Герман был единствен
ным миссионером православной Церкви на Кадьяке. Лю
бовь отца Германа к людям доходила до самоотвержения.
Однажды на корабле из Соединенных Штатов занесена
была на остров Ситку, а оттуда на остров Кадьяк поваль
ная заразная болезнь оспа. Она начиналась жаром, силь
ным насморком и удушьем и оканчивалась колотьем; в
три дня человек умирал. Не было на острове ни доктора,
ни лекарств.
Болезнь распространялась по селениям быстро охвати
ла окрестности. Смертность была так велика, что некому
было копать могилы, и тела лежали не зарытыми. Во всё
время этой грозной болезни, продолжавшейся с посте
пенным ослаблением целый месяц, отец Герман, не щадя
себя, неутомимо посещал больных, увещевал их тер
петь, молиться, приносить покаяние или приготовлял их
к смерти. Постепенно болезнь отступила, а все местные

With the opening of those islands sacred .necessity ap
peared to light up by Evangelical knowledge their wild inhab
itants. For this sacred mission, on blessing of the Holy Synod
of St. Petersburg Metropolitan Gabriel has charged to aged
man Nazarij to select the capable people from Valaam brother
hood.
In 1794 the first spiritual mission has arrived to Kodiak: ten
monks of the Valaam monastery led by archimandrite losaf,
among which there was also the monk Herman.
Holy activity of preachers quickly-flooded with the light of
Gospel preaching among the sons of Russia.
For the year of about six thousand accepted Christianity.
It was built a school for the education of the newly-baptised
children, built the church in the place of residence of the m is
sionaries.
But unknown destinies of God, the general successes of
mission lasted not so much time. In six years after the use
ful education,the chief of the mission bishop losaf has sunk,
together with his men, the other left one after another, and
finally,only father Herman has left, the God favored him and
he worked for education of Aleuts for a long time».
Since his young years he has conceived the great jealousy
to piety and at the age of sixteen has become a monk.
At first he entered the Holy Trinity-Sergius hermitage of St.
Petersburg diocese. In Trinity-Sergiev hermitage he has lived
for six years and has then passed to the Valaam monastery.
The son of a merchant from Serpukhov town of the Moscow
province, he was written in the stars,to be the first sacred
patron of Russian America.
After the deaths of all brotherhood,the father Herman re
mained in loneliness for a long time.
Only in 1805 he has been sent for help one more priest, the
father Gedeon, but he has gone soon.
Since then up to his death in 1837,the father Herman was
the only missionary of Orthodox Church on Kodiak.
The father Herman loved people to the dedication. Once, by
the ship from the United States, the mortal smallpox illness
has been brought on island Sitka, and there from on island
Kodiak. The illness began with high temperature, strong cold,
asthma and terminated in colic pains; in three days the person
died. There were no doctors, medicines on the island.
The illness, spreading all over the settlements, has quickly
captured the vicinities.
Death rate was so great that there was no one to dig the
graves, and bodies were lying not buried.
During this terrible illness, proceeding with gradual belit
tling for the whole month, the father Herman, without sparing
itself, tirelessly visited the patients, admonished them to to l
erate, pray, repent or prepared them for death.
