только 10 часов. Но и за 10 часов неутомимый учёный
успел сделать невероятно много. Он определил 160 видов
растений неизвестной земли и даже успел познакомиться
с местными жителями. Правда, сами они убежали, когда
шлюпка со «Св. Петра» причалила к берегу. Стеллер вни
мательно изучил брошенные жилища, нехитрую утварь и
сделал изумительный по точности вывод: местные жите
ли должны быть родственниками чукчей и камчадалов.
Они пришли сюда из Азии! Впоследствии этот вывод был
подтверждён. Тяжело больной, капитан-командор сам ни
разу не сходил на американский берег.
21 июля В. Беринг пошёл на запад. Почти всё время
была очень бурная погода, корабль носило по волнам, как
«колоду». Не хватало воды и провизии.
4 ноября вдали показались высокие горы, покрытые
снегом. Моряки решили, что подошли к Камчатке, и, не
найдя удобной гавани, стали на якорь недалеко от берега,
у скал. Неожиданно высокая волна перебросила судно че
рез бурун в бухту, сравнительно спокойную и достаточно
глубокую.
Это было исключительным везением после стольких
несчастий, люди поспешили перейти на сушу. Но это был
пустынный остров, сил плыть дальше не было, поэтому
решили остаться на острове. Когда закончилась перевоз
ка больных и припасов на берег, только 10 моряков ещё
держались на ногах. 20 человек умерли, остальные боле
ли цингой. Больной В. Беринг целый месяц лежал в зем
лянке на полу засыпанный песком, считая что так теплее.
6 декабря 1741 г. он умер. Земля, к которой прибило его

At last, on November, 4th, the high mountains covered with
snow have been seen in the distance. Seamen have decided
that they have approached to Kamchatka, and, without having
found convenient harbor, dropped anchor in some distance
from the coast, near the rocks. Unexpectedly high wave has
thrown a vessel through surf in a bay, rather quiet and deep
enough. It was exclusive luck after such misfortunes; people
have hastened to pass to a land. But it was the deserted is
land, there were no forces to sail further, therefore they have
decided to stay on the island. When transportation of ill per
sons and supplies on the coast has ended, only 10 seamen
still kept standing. 20 persons have died, the others were ill a
scurvy. Sick V. Bering lay the whole month in a dugout, on a
floor filled up by sand, considering that it would be warmer.
On December, 6th, 1741 he has died. The land to which has
